THAILAND AT GLANCE -Thailand, known formerly as Siam and officially as the Kingdom of Thailand, is a country located in Southeast Asia between latitudes 5° and 20° N and longitudes 97° and 105°E . Spreading along 1,648 km (1,024 mi), Thailand covers the area 513,120 sq km (198,120 sq mi) and is bordered to the north by Myanmar and Laos, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west by the Andaman Sea and Myanmar.

Geographically, Thailand can be split into four different regions — Northern Thailand, Northeastern Thailand, Central Thailand, and Southern Thailand. These regions, however, are different from each other by not only the natural beauty and the history but also the people living style and the food taste. Today, Thailand is divided into 76 provinces and 1 special administrative division. The largest city, also capital of Thailand, is Bangkok division set by the Chao Phraya River. Chiang Mai and Phuket are also important cities that drawn much visitors' attention.

The Thailand people consists of three main groups: Siamese, Lao, and Yuan as well as many small groups belonging to different language families, such as Karen, Akha, Hmong, Mien, Lahu, Lisu, and Palaung. There are also longstanding immigrant communities, some of which are Chinese and Indians.

More Information on Thailand

The earliest inhabitants in Thailand land were hunter-gatherers, but about 4,000 BC they began farming rice. At the beginning, Thailand was divided into small states called Meuang. By 100 AD they were practicing Theravada Buddhism. However, the ancestors of modern Thais are believed to have come from southern China, migrated to Thailand between the 10th century and the 13th century AD. Meanwhile, between the 9th century and the 13th century, much of what is now Thailand was ruled by the Khmers, people from what is now Cambodia.

Several small states in the Mekong River valley united to form a kingdom called Sukhothai in the 13th century. It is regarded as the first Thai kingdom in Thailand. However, the first Thai kingdom did not last long as it declined in the late 14th century. Meanwhile, another kingdom arose in Thailand called Ayuthaya and annexed the kingdom of Sukhothai. During the 15th century, Ayuthaya continued to grow and launched certain invasion against the Khmer Empire.

The first Europeans in Thailand were the Portuguese in 1511. They were followed by the Dutch in 1605, the English in 1612, and the French in 1662. In 1675 a Greek called Constantine Phaulkon became an official at the court in Thailand. He permitted the French to station soldiers in Thailand. But after his removal in 1688 , the French were expelled. Hence, Thailand adopted an isolationist policy by cutting its contact with Europe countries until the early 19th century.

In 1765 the peace in Thailand came to an end by the Burmese invasion that captured Ayuthaya capital in 1767 and destroyed it. But in 1769 a Thai general named Phraya Taksin has won the victory from its insurrection against the Burmese and set a new capital in Thonburi. During his rule, he also conquered much of Laos and other parts of Southeast Asia. However, King Taksin began to have delusions and he was removed in a coup in 1782. The coup leader, Chao Phraya Chakri, replaced became king of Thailand under the title Rama I and moved the capital to Bangkok. The successors of the Rama I were Rama II (1809-1824), Rama III (1824-1851). During their reigns, Thai culture flourished.

The history of Thailand has turned into a new page while the king Rama IV or Mongkut allowed the British to trade and live in Thailand by signature of treaties with many other western countries and encouraged the study of Western science. The following king Rama V (1868-1901) has made certain reforms from the tax system to the government organization. To avoid being colonized by Europeans, the King Rama V, however, was forced to cede territory in Laos and Cambodia to France and territory in Malaya to Britain in late 19^th and early 20^th century.

During the first and second World wars, some battles were happened in Thailand but they were not much bloody. In 1946 Thailand signed peace treaties with Britain and France. The same year Thailand joined the UN. In May 1946 a new constitution for Thailand was published. From then Thailand often faced the political issues caused by few peaceful or violent coups, but Thailand underwent the amazing economic growth, especially in late 20^th century. It was transformed from a poor, agricultural country to a newly industrialized one. Today Thailand is now a prosperous country and its economy is growing steadily.
